Martin is a Cotswold based sculpture who expresses his artistic ideas through the hard-won craftsmanship of stone carving. His desire to create forms in stone celebrates its unique colour, texture, heft and longevity, and employs techniques that have changed little over centuries.
He gains immense satisfaction by creating pieces as a ‘direct sculptor’ – working shapes directly from large blocks guided only by his sketches and photographs. The greatest pleasure of the artistic process of stone reduction is the slow revealing of an imagined form – the process leaves little room for error.
Much of Martin’s early work reflects a figurative ‘rite of passage’ sculpting complex physical forms like hands and faces, but now his work has become more personalised and abstract. Each of Martin’s pieces is unique, one-offs often fuelled by his desire to create pieces that comment on environmental and societal issues.
